| The Castle of Prince of Sweden |
|
In 1920,
William of Sweden (1884-1965)
visited our village probably in the company of his father
king Gustave V. Attracted by the spirit and the peace of this
place, he will buy a housing estate 3 years later that he
will call " Château Eza ". The Royal family
of Sweden will stay on several occasions until 1953, when
the Prince finally separates from his castle.

Line
of descent from the Empire Marshal Jean-Baptist Bernadotte,
Guillaume of Sweden does not miss an occasion to express his
affection for France and Eze. In this way, for the ceremonies
of November 11, 1929, he makes a speech of which we borrow
an extract from the writings of X Cottier :
"I thank you wholeheartedly for the honour that you made me, by choosing me like sponsor for the baptism of the flag of our commune. This honour is doubly important to me, because I must say to you, that French blood runs in my veins... My ancestors were born not far from here... Everything attaches me to this sunny corner of the South " |

Francophile,
William of Sweden leaves the Royal Court to benefit of the
mildness of living in a perched village of the Riviera. He
publishes several works, Black tales, Among the dwarfs and
the gorillas
But after the death of her companion in
1953, William of Sweden separates of his "house".

André
Rochat carried out a very active life in the hotel trade but
also in
the army. Until 1971 he was delegate to ICRC
in Yemen then general deputy in the Middle East and it is
completely by chance that he discovers Eze village in 1977.
His first wish was to restore the original appearance of the
castle when it belonged to the prince of Sweden . Then, noticing
the growing interest of the public he didn't resist the temptation
of creating a tea-room there.
After this initial success it became a restaurant and finally a hotel. The Château Eza is now a 4 star hotel, reminding us by his surroundings the charm of the "Belle Epoque" and "les années folles" . |
